This was such an interesting read!! I am obsessed with mint lol I have never thought about infusing it into liquor! I loved reading about the various recipes you tried and im actually thinking about giving it ago myself!! Although either I will have to wait until next growing season or opt for grocery store mint!! This was such a fabulous read i enjoyed it from start to finish!! Thanks so much for sharing your Crème De Menthe guide!! 🔥🔥🔥
Tara, wow, you’ve made my day! I think you should absolutely try it out! Crème De Menthe is so easy to make, and so delicious.
And since you like mint, I hope you’ll like my upcoming post about the 54 different varieties I grew this year! It’s been mint insanity around here. I’ve photographed them all while they’ve been growing, and taken notes on all of their scents and flavors. I really hope you’ll like it.
Please let me know if you have any questions about growing or eating mint, and whether you try the liqueur recipe. I’m so grateful for your kind and thoughtful words about my post! ❤️
Aww im so happy I was able to make your day! You clearly put alot of time, and effort into your post and I looove all things mint!! Down to ice cream!! I will definitely have to check out your upcoming post!! I have never in my life had a difficult time growing anything but even though mint is supposedly easy...I continue to kill them 😭😭😭 Chocolate mint, pineapple mint, spearmint 😭😭😭 like seriously!! Yet I have been able to grow anything else!! I will definitely come to you for advise the next time I go to plant some!! I will not give up!! 🔥🔥🔥 perhaps its because im trying to grow them in containers!
I’m so glad you’re a mint fan too! There has to be a reason you’re killing them. Are your containers pretty large? Do you have them in full sun? Are you watering them often? (Pots are awful for needing watering often. I wish the rain would do it well enough, but it rarely does, sigh.)
I mean, there are so many things that it could be, and once we figure it out, you’ll be growing your mint so well! I mean, even mine is dying every year, and there’s a reason for it. I live on a lake, and the winds at our house are ridiculous. I mean, in winter, it feels like the house is going to fall over from the wind! I’ve packed straw into my pots, wrapped them in fabric made just for this, and moved them against the house, and they STILL die for me. I hope this makes you feel better. So for me, it’s because of the awful cold wind. Hopefully your reason is a much easier one to fix.
Do you by any chance live close to me in southeast Michigan? Because you’re welcome to all the free mint cuttings you’d like if you’re close! I’ve just given up on the idea of taking cuttings and keeping them indoors all winter. My scented geranium cuttings are taking over the house, and I’m pretty minted out right now, lol. Seriously, they’re all still alive, and the cuttings would do really well if you keep them indoors.
Otherwise, please let me know your growing conditions, and we can figure out how to make your mint grow better for you! I’m really excited to show you all of the varieties I’ve grown this year, so you’ll have some cool ones to pick from to try growing. You’ve already tried some of the good classics. You can do it, and I’ll help you figure it out!
Aww thank you so much!! I chose really large planters and put them out in the yard which gets full sun for a big portion of the day...I do make sure to keep them watered but I wonder if its a soil issue...unfortunately im all the way in alberta Canada i would love to take you up on your offer!! Im wondering if its the wind!! I am very close to the lake myself...winters here kill everything but I cant seem to keep it alive for growing season!! Which is so weird...I would love to try growing some indoors i wouldnt mind if mint took over my house 😂🤣😂 it looooove it!! Im really obsessed 🤣!! Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a detailed reply!! Im so excited to try some more...if i continue to grow in containers what sort of soil mix would be best?? maybe its a combo of soil and wind!! Thanks sooo much!!
Wow, every time I complain about the horrible, bitter cold here in Michigan, someone from Canada helps me realize I'm basically in the tropics! I don't know how you do it!
Ok, there's some good stuff to unpack here. I didn't realize you're losing your mint during the growing season. Mine just dies over the winter because of the wind, even though I only buy mints that are hardy enough to come back in spring.
Ok, let's figure this out. When you say your pots are in full sun, are they getting at least 6 hours, and including noon within that time? This is a dealbreaker if they can't get this much at a minimum. The south-facing side of your house is best if you can swing it.
You're watering enough, so that's good. And heaven help us if you'd planted it in the ground. So it's great that it's in pots, lol. So the soil could be a factor. You need something that drains well. I use half potting soil and half compost, with fertilizer mixed in at planting time, and sometimes biochar too. And I water with kelp extract and compost tea. They go crazy for this stuff! I can recommend all of the brands I use if helpful.
(And by July, I'm crabby and swearing like crazy when I need to water more than twice a week, since I need to drag the hose up and down 3 different patios to water SO many pots. I even installed a pulley system to bring the sprayer up to the second floor. But I digress, as I brought this damn thing upon myself, lol.)
I don't know if it could be the wind that's a factor for you during the growing season, since it's only the winter wind that kills my plants after they've already gone dormant. But I mean, maybe even your summer wind is that much colder than mine? How cold are your summer nights?
This is exciting to try to figure out. We'll get there! I'm so glad to know another real mint fan so we can nerd out together. ❤️
LOL I heard about Michigan being cold 🤣😂🤣 but im like in the frozen desolation for real 🤣😂🤣 I will definitely try some of the wonderful tips….the summers here get super hot…so its probably not the wind!! I will look at the soil combos i have been using!! Thanks for such detailed response yet again!! Your amazing!! Im taking notes and I will take notes and definitely try these helpful pointers when the time comes!! 🔥🔥🔥
